When you reach the standard when you are ready to drive on your own you must take a driving test. You can apply for your test in one of the ways shown at the bottom of the page and attend a test centre in your chosen area.
The test lasts between 40mins-50mins, and you will be assessed by an examiner on your overall driving ability and two out of the three manoeuvres you have been taught + the possibility of an emergency stop. You will also be asked a couple of questions on vehicle maintenance. |
When you pass your test you will receive a Pass Certificate. If your provisional license was issued after 1 March 2004, or you have changed your address and written it on the paper part of your license, the examiner will shred your old license and scan your pass details and send them electronically to the DVLA. The DVLA will post your new license to you, usually within 3 weeks of passing your test. |
