Safety Check “show me / tell” me Questions. Under the bonnet. |

The vehicle maintenance lessons by your instructor are designed to give everybody an idea of how to make basic maintenance checks on their vehicle, to keep it safe on the road, thus needing less time in an expensive garage. When you go for your practical test you will be required to answer two questions on this subject, if you have been tutored correctly you will have no trouble with this stage of your test. |

Identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid. Identify reservoir(6) check level against high/low markings.
Other Checks. The power steering unit(5) should also be checked on a regular basis Keep the battery(7) fully charged and if possible check the battery acid levels topped up to avoid damage to the internal plates |

Safety checks inside the car. |
|
Show me/explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained whilst the engine is started, should result in a noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Also turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning. |

Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear! Put your foot on the foot brake to secure the vehicle. Demonstrate by applying the parking brake and that when it is fully applied it secures the vehicle, and is not at the end of the working travel. |

Show me how you would check that the horn is working (Off road only). The check is carried out using the control, you may need to turn on the ignition. |

Tell me how you would check the brakes are working before starting a journey. Brakes should be tested as you pull off, Brakes should not feel spongy or slack and vehicle should not pull to one side. |

Safety checks around the car. |

Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working. Operate the brake pedal and use a reflection in a window, garage doors etc or get someone to help. |
|
Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.
Apply the indicators or hazard warning switch and check that the indicators are all flashing. |
|
Show me how you would check that the headlights & tail lights are working. Turn the ignition on if necessary , operate the switch and walk around the vehicle checking the lights are all on. |

Tyre checks. |


|
Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressure for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked. Information can be found in the manufacturer’s guide. Use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget the spare tyre and remember to refit the valve cap. |

Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road. There should be no cuts and bulges and the legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference. |

Identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil. Identify dipstick / oil level indicator (3), and describe how you check the level of the oil, when the engine is cold, against the minimum and maximum markers on the dipstick. Top up(4) as necessary |

Identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level. Identify the header tank(2) or radiator filler cap and describe how you top up to correct level, high/low level on tank. |

Identify where the windscreen washer bottle is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level. Identify bottle(1) and explain how to check the level and to keep it topped up. |
